Davis Cup: what is Brazil’s division and whether it is competing in the Finals

O Brazil is not in the final stage of the 2025 Davis Cup. The decisive stage of the tournament brings together just eight countries – Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, Austria, Czechia, Argentina and Germany – who qualified for the knockout stage played in Bologna, Italy. The decision takes place this Sunday (23/11).

In September, however, the Brazilian team beat Greece away from home, in Athens, in a match valid for World Group I, and the result put the country back in contention for the tournament’s elite in 2026. Under the command of João Fonseca, who triumphed in both singles matches, and with the victory of the duo Rafael Matos/Marcelo Melo, the team captained by Jaime Oncins closed the series 3-1 to Brazil.

This triumph was important because Brazil had lost to France in February and, as a result, had been left out of the fight for the 2025 title, being forced to compete to remain in World Group I. If it were defeated by the Greeks, it would fall to an intermediate zone between the second and third divisions in 2026. The victory, however, guaranteed the country the chance to compete for the elite again.

Due to the Davis Cup format, the Brazil will participate in the qualifiers in early 2026right after the Australian Open, between the end of January and the beginning of February. The system provides for two preliminary phases: whoever wins both advances to Final 8, the decisive stage that defines the champion. Those who fall in the first phase – as happened with Brazil in 2025 – return to World Group I. Teams that pass through the first phase, but are eliminated in the second, return to the qualifiers in the following season.

Has Brazil ever won the Davis Cup?

Brazil has never won the Davis Cup, a tournament that has existed since 1900. The country’s best participation in the history of the competition was reaching the semifinals on two occasions: in 1966, when Thomaz Koch led the team, and in 2000, in the modern era of the World Group, with Gustavo Kuerten leading the team.

In the 2000 campaign, considered the country’s strongest, Brazil eliminated Germany and Slovakia before being defeated by Australia, who ended up taking the title.
