Growing your own garlic is tempting. As well as the possibility to save a little for a rather expensive seed. But according to the expert, it may not be worth it at all. “Always look for where the sprigs come from. Only then can you be sure what will grow from them. And also what will come with them,” says Jana Bucharová in the podcast.

To be like the garlic godmother from a children’s book. You can anoint each toast with your own clove of fragrant and delicious garlic. Cultivation is not at all complicated, in fact it is enough to plant at a sufficient depth and then just look forward to the harvest. But if you look around a few online stores and in garden centers and other sellers, you might be surprised by the significant price differences.
Disease problem
“Almost anything will sprout and grow, even if you are of course not sure about the results. In addition, you will get garlic that is adapted to our climate and you can choose a suitable variety according to the conditions in your garden,” says Jana Bucharová, an expert in the magazine Recipe for garden topics. Including whether you prefer a sharper taste or a sweeter one, stick or non-stick. “However, the biggest problem is that you can introduce a disease into the bed with low-quality seedlings, which will then be difficult to get rid of,” adds the expert.
Fungal diseases and molds, which often live on garlic, remain in the soil. It is mainly fusarium rot and white sclerotia rot. They tend to be very resistant, so it is almost impossible to clean the infested soil afterwards. There is often no effective chemical, let alone natural, protection against them. If anything, it’s definitely a long shot.
Talk about confirmation
So when you go shopping, look for a seller who can prove himself with a certificate. “Certified planting is rigorously checked and it’s simply a guarantee,” says the expert. “So if you’re buying garlic somewhere, always ask for certification if the seller doesn’t display it himself. Especially at markets and similar sales.”
Although a higher investment will await you, but it will be worth it. In addition, if you are just starting to grow garlic and do not inadvertently introduce a disease into the garden, you can theoretically use your future harvest over and over again. That is, if you happen to not eat all the tasty cloves.
