Exhibition shows objects that accompanied babies abandoned in the circle of Santa Casa

Around 240 thousand babies were left in the circle of Santa Casa da Misericórdia, between 1657 and 1939.

The Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Lisbon holds almost 90 thousand objects, which accompanied babies abandoned in the circle. Some of these signs are on display in the Temporary Exhibition Gallery of the São Roque Museum until March next year.

The Santa Casa has the largest collection in the world, in terms of signs left with babies who were abandoned on the wheel and with it it is nominated for UNESCO Heritage status.

The application is made jointly with Argentina, Belgium and Italy.

The exhibition “Children of all… whose children? Those on display at the Lisbon Wheel” also has works by Leonardo da Vinci, Paula Rego or Almada Negreiros.
