Former president of the Chamber of Deputies, PT member João Paulo Cunha (SP) considers the idea of the party leadership to be a mistake.
According to him, there are other more urgent priorities, and the event should be moved to 2027.
“Next year we will have to set up the 27 state platforms for the government and Senate, define slates of deputies. In April, we will have to define the replacements for around 20 ministers who will contest the election. The campaign will already be at a strong pace. And will we waste time and money to hold a congress on the future?”, asks Cunha.
Away from politics since the Mensalão, in which he was one of those involved, he maintains good internal traffic within the party
For the former deputy, who presided over the Chamber between 2003 and 2005, it makes no sense for the PT to discuss its role in the coming years before knowing the result of the presidential election.
“The reality for the party will be one if President Lula wins and another if he loses. This debate has to be held later”, he says.
The congress was approved by the PT National Executive last Monday (17) and will discuss structural issues such as statute reform and political priorities for the coming decades, in addition to presenting a suggested government program for Lula’s eventual fourth term.
For Cunha, the congress will be a “simulacrum”. “People will pretend that they are discussing party issues, but they will really be interested in their campaigns and Lula’s”, he states.
“It’s a shot in the foot to spend energy on this now, at a time when we have an articulated and mobilized right and an election that will not be a walk in the park”, he adds.
