Grizzly bear injures 11 in attack on schoolchildren in British Columbia

A grizzly bear attacked a group of schoolchildren and teachers in British Columbia, injuring 11 people and leaving two in critical condition, local authorities are urging caution.

A grizzly bear attacked a group of schoolchildren and teachers on a hiking trail in the Canadian province of British Columbia on Thursday, injuring at least 11 people, two of them critically. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AP agency.

The attack happened Thursday afternoon in the community of Bella Coola, about 700 kilometers northwest of Vancouver. The municipality of the indigenous Nuxal tribe said the “aggressive bear” remained at large on Thursday evening and police and conservationists were on the scene. At the same time, she warned people not to leave their homes, as there are armed police officers in the area.

Critical condition of the injured

A spokesman for the local emergency medical service reported that two people were in critical condition and two others were seriously injured. The others were treated on the spot.

The school there, which the children attend, said on the social network that it will remain closed on Friday and will provide psychological counseling if necessary, AP adds.
