Russia is trying to use the US peace plan to avoid sanctions from Washington and European Union negotiations to use Moscow’s frozen assets to finance Kiev. This was said on Friday by the head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallasová, TASR informs about it according to a report by the AFP agency.
- Russia is using the US peace plan against sanctions.
- The EU negotiated the use of Russian assets to help Ukraine.
- Kallas warned against postponing discussions and sanctions.
- The US has imposed new sanctions on Russian energy companies.
- EU leaders support the fair involvement of Ukraine in the negotiations.
Kallasová: We must not fall into the trap
“Today, US sanctions against Russia should come into effect. I hope that there will be no decision to postpone these sanctions, because that is exactly what Russia wants,” said Kallas. “Russia also wants us to delay discussions on reparations loans so that frozen assets are not used to benefit Ukraine,” she told reporters. “We should be very adamant not to fall into these two traps,” she warned.
“This is a very dangerous moment for everyone,” she warned, according to Reuters. “We all want this war to end, but it depends on how it ends. Russia has no legal right to any concessions from the country it invaded, and the final terms of any agreement must be decided by Ukraine,” she assessed.
European leaders supported Kyiv and declared that the country must be fully involved in the events. They reacted to the 28-point US peace plan requiring several concessions from Ukraine.
Using frozen Russian assets to finance a new loan for Kyiv
Last month, US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of sanctions on Russian oil giants Lukoil and Rosneft, which are expected to take effect on Friday. The head of the White House took this step in an attempt to put pressure on Moscow.
The US proposal came at a time when the EU is debating whether to use some of the Russian central bank’s frozen assets to finance a new 140 billion euro loan to Kyiv.
The proposal is blocked by Belgium due to concerns that Russia could take retaliatory legal action. EU leaders are expected to try to reach an agreement at the December summit on how to secure further funding for Ukraine.
