The choice of the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, to fill a vacancy on the Federal Supreme Court (STF) aroused criticism from entities that had been pressuring President Lula to increase the female and black presence on the Court. In a statement released this Thursday, the organizations Fórum Justiça, Plataforma Justa and Themis Gênero e Justiça — which had presented suggestions for women for the position — called on the government to “transform speeches into practices” and reduce gender inequality in public positions. Allies of the PT member believe that he will choose a woman for the position currently occupied by Messias.
The main listed companies are Anelize Almeida, attorney general of the National Treasury; Isadora Cartaxo de Arruda, general secretary of Litigation; and Adriana Venturini, federal attorney general. The three occupy second-tier positions at AGU. Disregarding women, the main name is Flávio Roman, current number 2 in the department.
According to entities critical of Messias’ choice, the problem is not the name itself, but the “continuity of an exclusionary pattern in the composition of the Brazilian justice system”.

With Lula’s balance of nominations, the STF reduced its female participation from two ministers to just one, Cármen Lúcia, in its current composition. In 2023, Lula chose Flávio Dino for the vacancy opened with the retirement of Rosa Weber.
