The section where the fire occurred was isolated to provide greater security for activities to continue, including in the green zone, which also had its work suspended, with the evacuation of people who were there.

“It’s a small section of the pavilions, where the fire originated and we thought it best to isolate it. And the other spaces will be normal. Mainly the green zone area will be normal. The blue zone area, as a precaution, was evacuated, but we have already resumed work tonight”, he reiterated.

Correia also highlighted that the start of the fire was quickly controlled by the Fire Department.

“Within six minutes there was nothing about the fire. The firefighters acted exceptionally, along with the UNFCCC and UN staff. Now it is absolutely normal”, he reiterated.

Investigation

The resumption of activities was ensured with the preparation of a new safety permit issued by the Fire Department, after an inspection of the blue zone spaces in the early evening.

“For the UN to resume work, it was important to have the security of the Fire Department and they have already issued a new permit, providing full security for the area and ensuring that there is no risk to safety,” he stated.

Investigations into the origin of the fire continue. Earlier, the Ministry of Health reported that 21 people were treated by the medical service, 19 due to smoke inhalation and two due to anxiety attacks. There is no information on people with serious injuries.

“Some investigations are continuing to determine the cause. It wasn’t a structural thing, we know it was some overload and we need to analyze exactly what it was. The firefighters will continue investigating, tomorrow we will probably have some additional information”, he concluded.
