Putin sees the US peace plan as the basis for a peace treaty

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed on Friday during a meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation that Moscow had received an American peace plan aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. According to the head of the Kremlin, he can “lay the foundations” for a future peace treaty, writes TASR based on reports from Reuters, AFP and TASS.

  • Putin confirmed the acceptance of the American peace plan for Ukraine.
  • The head of the Kremlin threatened to seize the territory if the plan was rejected.
  • The US called on Russia to make concessions in the peace process.
  • Kyiv demands territorial and security concessions from Moscow from the plan.
  • Zelensky promised alternatives and preservation of Ukrainian interests.

Putin has threatened to take more territory if Ukraine rejects the proposal

“We have a text. We received it through communication channels with the US administration. I believe it could lay the foundations for a final peace settlement,” Putin said, referring to the 28-point peace plan backed by US President Donald Trump. The Russian president threatened to take more territory if Ukraine rejects the proposal. He referred to the allegedly occupied Ukrainian city of Kupiansk.

According to Putin, the plan was not consulted in detail with Russia, and neither Ukraine nor its European allies understand the reality of the advance of Russian troops on the battlefield. According to him, Russia is ready to continue peace negotiations despite being satisfied with the current dynamics on the front.

The US asked Moscow for concessions

The United States is said to have called on Moscow to make concessions in the peace process. “During the preliminary discussion, the American side asked us to make concessions and show, as they called it, flexibility,” Putin said.

According to Putin, Russia and the United States discussed Trump’s peace initiatives even before the bilateral summit in Alaska. “We hardly talked about it publicly, only very generally, but it’s no secret, President Trump’s peace plan for Ukraine was discussed before the meeting in Alaska,” Putin revealed.

“After the negotiations in Alaska, there was a certain pause from the American side. We know that it was related to Ukraine’s de facto rejection of the peace plan for settling the dispute proposed by President Trump. I think it was just at the time when a new version of it appeared, actually a modernized plan, this time with 28 points,” added the Russian president.

Zelenskyi: I will not betray Ukrainian national interests

Kiev’s draft 28-point peace plan calls for territorial and security concessions from Moscow, while Russia will be readmitted to the G8 and sanctions imposed on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine will be eased.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi declared on Friday that he will not betray Ukrainian national interests and will propose alternatives to the peace plan. According to him, the next week will be very difficult for Kyiv, because Ukraine faces the decision of whether to lose its dignity or risk losing the United States as its key partner with the American peace plan.

“We will continue to cooperate with America and all partners. We will look for a solution with our main partner – the United States. I will present arguments, I will persuade, I will propose alternatives,” declared the Ukrainian president in an evening video speech published on social networks.
