Resignation of the finance minister weakens the Irish government

The surprising resignation of his finance minister has forced an unwanted cabinet reshuffle on the Taoiseach (Gaelic for chief), Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin from the national liberal Fianna Fáil party. Paschal Donohoe, who moved to the Washington World Bank and served as a minister in the key department for almost ten years, will be followed by Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris, who previously served as Foreign Minister. The 39-year-old leader of the conservative coalition partner Fine Gael was Prime Minister for six months last year, but is considered inexperienced when it comes to financial matters.
