The Russian army’s attack on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporozhye on Thursday evening claimed at least five lives and injured three. Referring to the local emergency services, the AFP reported about it on Friday night.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2022, Zaporozhye has repeatedly been the target of missile and drone attacks. They often target civilian infrastructure, warehouses, power plants and populated areas, causing civilian casualties and material damage. After the outbreak of war, the city of Zaporozhye and the area of the same name they gained high military importance due to the proximity to the front and the presence of energy infrastructure. The largest nuclear power plant in Europe and a hydroelectric power plant on the Dnieper River are located in the area.
