On Friday, the Court of Appeal in Belgrade overturned the first-instance verdict in the case of the boy’s parentswho two and a half years ago during the mass shooting at the Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School in the Serbian capital he shot nine people. In late December 2024, the High Court in Belgrade sentenced father Vladimir Kecmanović to 14 and a half years and mother Miljana Kecmanović to three years in prison for a serious offense against public safety and neglect of a minor. On May 3, 2023, during the first lesson at Vladislav Ribnikar’s school, their 13-year-old son shot seven girls, one boy and a school guard with his father’s two pistols and injured six students and a history teacher. One seriously injured student died on May 15.
The boy was not criminally responsible according to the law, and therefore he was placed in a special psychiatric hospital, where he is still under supervision. Nemanja Marinković, an instructor at the shooting range where Vladimir taught his son to shoot, was sentenced to one year and three months in prison for perjury. Now his sentence has been changed to one year of house arrest. In addition to this case, five other legal proceedings were initiated based on private lawsuits filed by family members of those killed and injured.
