Venezuela’s attorney general told AFP Thursday that opposition leader laureate Maria Corina Machado would be considered a “fugitive” if she left the country to receive the award.

Ms. Machado, who says she is hiding in , has expressed her intention to go to Norway to receive the Nobel Prize.

“If she were to leave the territory of Venezuela while criminal investigations are pending against her, she would be considered a fugitive,” noted Attorney General Tarek William Schaab, recalling that Ms. Machado faces investigations for “conspiracy, incitement to hatred and terrorism.”

He also said that “more than 100 mercenaries”, persons of “more than 30 nationalities”, who are “linked to the CIA”, are also being prosecuted by the Venezuelan prosecutor’s office.

The dispute with Maduro

Maria Corina Machado complains that Nicolas Maduro “stole” the 2024 election when he was elected to Venezuela’s top office for a third consecutive six-year term.

The US and its allies, including several governments in Latin America, do not recognize the 2024 election result.

In an interview she gave to Agence France-Presse in mid-October, Mrs. Machado said she was convinced that President Maduro would leave power “with or without negotiation.”
