With Messias, Pernambuco will have STF minister after 62 years – 11/20/2025 – Panel

With the appointment of , Pernambuco can once again have a Federal Supreme Court minister after more than 60 years.

In total, 11 people from Pernambuco occupied a seat in the Supreme Court plenary. The last was Barros Barreto, appointed by Getúlio Vargas in 1939, during the Estado Novo dictatorship. He stayed at the STF until 1963, that is, for 24 years.

The Faculty of Law of Recife, where he studied, may have a former student in the STF after more than 30 years.

The most recent graduate of the institution to occupy a position on the Court was Rafael Mayer, from Paraíba, who retired in 1989 and served as minister for just over ten years.

In total, 40 STF ministers were trained at the institution, initially located in Olinda, which is one of the oldest in Brazil. It was created in 1827 by Emperor Dom Pedro 1st, as was the Faculty of Law of Largo de São Francisco, currently part of the University of São Paulo.

If Messias is approved by the majority of senators, the nomination also strengthens Pernambuco’s protagonism in Brasília.

Currently, the state has the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and seven ministers in the federal government, a number that will drop to six if Messias goes to the STF.

Messias, in fact, studied in the same UFPE Law class as the Minister of Social Security, Wolney Queiroz.
