was arrested earlier than expected. Arrested without fuss, without sensationalism, without handcuffs, in accordance with the law. Arrested preventively, for trying to escape a few days before the start of the sentence he was sentenced to for trying to steal the vote of the majority of Brazilians in 2022.
Jair tried to break his electronic ankle bracelet to escape amid the confusion that would be created by the vigil he called. It was 15 minutes from the embassies in Brasília.
If I had to bet on which embassy Jair would flee to, I would say one of the Arab absolute monarchies.
On November 13, 2021, for example, during a presidential trip to the United Arab Emirates, UOL published an article with the title “‘”. Jair worried about the well-being of political prisoners? Since when? You can bet he was the political prisoner.
On that same trip, Bolsonaro opened the first Brazilian embassy in , another monarchy in the gulf. I mean, open, open, it didn’t open. No ambassador to Bahrain was appointed during the Bolsonaro government. According to March 10, 2023, “the gesture of leaving the post without an ambassador was interpreted by some of the main Brazilian diplomats as a maneuver to prevent the State body from [o Itamaraty] be informed about the nature of relations between the Palácio do Planalto and the Gulf country”.
And last week, get this, he left the United States to visit Bahrain. He posted a photo with Sheikh Khaled bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, a member of the country’s royal family. In March 2022, the year of the coup attempt, Eduardo made a “few hours” visit to Bahrain, the nature of which was never explained.
Now imagine the size of the disaster that would be a Bolsonaro escape.
Brazil, which became an international example of the defense of democracy for having condemned it under the terms of the law, would suffer immense international demoralization. The majority of the electorate, especially poor voters, would discover that the police were unable to arrest the marginal who tried to steal their votes. New coup plotters would be encouraged by impunity, and belief in the rule of law would weaken on all sides of the political dispute. The American government would find a demoralized Brazil in the next rounds of negotiations.
With the reduction of an important part of Trump’s tariffs, Jair Bolsonaro was arrested watching the failure of his last great crime against Brazil, and hoping that Trump would at least agree to support his son by leaning on Disney in some way.
Even so, Jair could die without being convicted for the worst crime he committed, the mass asphyxiation of Brazilians due to lack of vaccination during the Covid-19 pandemic. For a few months in 2021, more than a third of the world’s Covid deaths occurred in Brazil, where 2.7% of the world’s population lives. Without João Dória’s vaccines, even more people would have died, and not due to hiccups.
While you, reader, are watching Jair’s arrival in jail, remember: here goes the greatest criminal in the history of the Republic.
