Caiado reacts to Bolsonaro’s arrest: ‘Sad chapter’

Governor of Goias stated that the process experienced by the former president is ‘a clear attempt to wear his dignity’

The governor of Goias, spoke out after the arrest on Saturday morning (22). Caiado stated that the arrest is “another sad chapter in national political life.” He also stated that the process of sentencing him to 27 years and three months and house arrest is “a clear attempt to shame his dignity”. Caiado classified the possibility of escape amid the vigil called by senator and son Flávio Bolsonaro as “unlikely” and compared it to January 8th.

Caiado also said that he hopes the decision will be reversed quickly and expressed solidarity with the former president’s family. Furthermore, he stated that the people’s response will come in next year’s elections.

Bolsonaro was taken to the Federal Police Superintendence for trying to escape, where he will be held in a State room, a space reserved for authorities such as Presidents of the Republic and other high-ranking public figures. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and former president Michel Temer were also detained in PF rooms. The decision does not yet mark the beginning of the prison sentence. Bolsonaro’s defense claims that there was no decision from the STF that ordered the former president’s arrest.

In a statement, the Federal Police reported that it had served a preventive arrest warrant issued by the STF. On September 11, by 4 votes to 1, the ministers of condemned the and seven allies for the crimes of armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état, qualified damage due to violence and serious threat and deterioration of listed property.
