Operation fulfilled a preventive arrest warrant authorized by the STF; allies classify action as ‘political’ and ‘revenge’
The PF (Federal Police) arrested former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) at his home, in Brasília, this Saturday (22). In a note, the PF informed that it had served a preventive arrest warrant authorized by the STF (Supreme Federal Court).
Unmarked vehicles arrived at the former agent’s residence, located in a condominium in Jardim Botânico, at around 6 am. Bolsonaro was then taken to the PF superintendence in the federal capital.
Allies reaction
On social media, parliamentarians from the Bolsonarist base spoke out against the arrest. The federal deputy and deputy leader of the opposition, Captain Alden (PL-BA), published a video stating that the action is political.
“Today, Brazil woke up to yet another political arrest! The biggest threat to public order is not at the door of a condominium, but in areas dominated by factions that the State does not face. And I say this: silencing the opposition will never be the way to pacify the country. Preventively arresting a former president for political reasons is a direct affront to the democracy they claim to defend. Brazil deserves Justice, not revenge. And we will not remain silent in the face of this absurdity!”, wrote Alden.
Federal deputy Zucco (PL-RS), leader of the opposition in the Chamber, published a video on Instagram calling the preventive detention unfair and claimed it was “revenge”. “He who fought against the system is now being held hostage by it”, he pointed out in the recording.
Federal deputy Caroline de Toni (PL-SC) said that “President Bolsonaro’s arrest is one of the biggest absurdities ever committed by ‘Brazilian justice’”.
