COP30: final proposal without reference to a roadmap to end the use of fossil fuels

The climate conference in Brazil reached an agreement this Saturday after a concession from the European Union. The final document does not have any indication of ending the use of fossil fuels.

On Friday night, the European Union spoke of a no-deal scenario. If the gradual abandonment of fossil energy was not mentioned in the COP30 final document, the text would be rejected. But after a long night of negotiations, the scenario changed.

“If we see what’s on the table, we think we should support it because at least it’s the right direction. Because it’s clear that we should stand side by side with our friends in the poorest nations,” said Wopke Hoekstra, European climate commissioner.

The agreement was closed on an additional day than expected. This Saturday morning’s text tripled the Adaptation Fund for the most vulnerable countries until 2030. The new agreement omits any mention of abandoning fossil fuels. The idea has strong opponents, including Russia, India and Saudi Arabia. Some of the largest fossil energy producers in the world.

“As president of COP30, I will create two plans: one to stop and reverse deforestation and the other to abandon fossil fuels in a fair, organized and balanced way”, says André Corrêa do Lago, president of COP30

Brazil is moving forward alone with a roadmap to end the use of fossil fuels. It expects more support, but this document is not binding. The final agreement reaffirms the international commitment to try to limit global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
