French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday that the American one for Ukraine is a good basis for work, but it needs to be re-examined and involve the Europeans as well. At the same time, he announced that on Tuesday the representatives of the so-called coalition willing to discuss this plan via video call. TASR informs about it according to the reports of the AFP and Reuters agencies.
“There is a peace plan that has emerged that includes ideas that are relatively well-known, whether they have been presented or not. It is good in that it proposes peace and recognizes important elements on issues of sovereignty, security guarantees,” Macron told reporters at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The need to review the plan
However, according to Macron, this plan needs to be re-examined because, above all, they did not discuss it with the Europeans. “However, it stipulates many things for the Europeans. The frozen (Russian) assets are held by the Europeans. The European integration of Ukraine is in the hands of the Europeans,” he noted. If there are no elements of deterrence, the Russians will “come back and break their promises,” he said.
At the same time, Macron announced that on Tuesday the leaders of the Coalition of the Willing – a loose grouping of around 35 countries led by Great Britain and France – will discuss this peace plan to “coordinate on this point, see what progress will be made in the coming days in the negotiations in Geneva and so that we can take new initiatives”.
Negotiations in Geneva
The Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, announced on Saturday that in the coming days, negotiations between representatives of Ukraine and the United States will be held in Geneva, in which representatives of Russia and other international partners of Ukraine will also participate. The media subsequently reported that the meetings will take place already on Sunday, and that the US Minister of Foreign Affairs Marco Rubio and the US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff will also fly to Switzerland. The Secretary of the US Department of Defense for Land Forces, Daniel Driscoll, arrived in Geneva on Saturday.
On Thursday, the United States presented Ukraine with a peace plan supported by US President Donald Trump. He gave Ukraine until Thursday (November 27) to accept this peace proposal. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said on Friday that the next week will be very difficult for Kyiv, because Ukraine is faced with the decision whether to lose its dignity or risk losing its key partner – the USA – in the US peace plan.
This 28-point proposal, the text of which has since been published by several world media, assumes, among other things, that Ukraine will cede the entire Donbas to Russia and undertake that its army will have a maximum of 600,000 members and that it will never join NATO.
