National Maritime Authority says the rescue took place over two days
The Maritime Police, which is participating in the “Greece 2025” mission, announced this Saturday that it had rescued 78 migrants who were in an isolated coastal area, with no land access, on the Greek island of Gavdos.
According to a statement from the National Maritime Authority (AMN), the rescue of the 78 migrants took place over two days.
During the operation, with operational coordination from the Greek authorities, members of the Maritime Police reached a group of migrants, having safely rescued them onto the vessel “Molivos”, in adverse situations, “involving the movement of migrants across the sea to board the vessel”.
The statement indicates that “the group was transported to the port and handed over to local authorities for legal identification and registration procedures”.
“Throughout the operation, situations of special vulnerability were identified, which required direct and constant monitoring by operational staff”, adds the note, without specifying.
The “Greece 2025” mission is coordinated by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX Agency).
“Since the beginning of Portuguese participation in the eastern Mediterranean, the Maritime Police has played a unique and pivotal role, which has been recognized numerous times by the Greek authorities, namely in multiple rescue and rescue actions for migrants, in close coordination with the Greek Coast Guard”, highlights the AMN in the statement released today.
