On Friday in Kyiv, the representatives of the United States presented to the ambassadors of the member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) the logic of their procedures in an attempt to make peace in the war in Ukraine. However, they were not informed of any specific information about the American peace plan. This was stated for TASR by the ambassador of the European Union in Ukraine, Katarína Mathernová, who also participated in the meeting.
According to her, American officials claimed that Washington “wants to provide security guarantees to Ukraine and that it is time for peace, because Ukraine will only lose in the long run.” Mathernová emphasized that during the meeting nothing specific was said about the American peace plan and she knows information about it mainly from the media.
In response to the publicized points of the proposal, she pointed out that the road to peace will still be very difficult. “I can’t imagine how Ukrainians could accept it (the peace plan) without changes,” she stated. In conclusion, she added that she informed the EU institutions about the meeting from her position as the ambassador of the European Union.
According to media reports, the American 28-point proposal envisages that Kyiv would have to accept territorial and security concessions from Moscow, for example. At the same time, Russia could be included again among the member states of the G8 group, and the sanctions imposed on Moscow after the invasion of Ukraine would also be eased.
European leaders have not yet officially received the American peace plan, but they will discuss it on the sidelines of the weekend G20 summit in South Africaannounced the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke by phone with the leaders of Germany, France and the United Kingdom in order to coordinate further steps.
Zelenskyi’s partners assured that they remain committed to promoting a “just and lasting” peace. Zelensky himself announced in his video message that he intends to present “alternatives” to this American proposal.
