Michelle withdraws from event after Bolsonaro’s arrest; ‘I won’t let him give up’

The preventive arrest of Jair Bolsonaro, carried out this Saturday morning (22) in Brasília by order of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, triggered a series of political, legal and family developments. Among them is the reaction of Michelle Bolsonaro, who was in Fortaleza when she received the news and released a statement on social media.

The episode focuses on who was arrested, when it occurred, the reason for the arrest and how the former first lady decided to position herself publicly. It also brings into discussion previous facts involving the former president, such as the 2018 attack, and the assessment of flight risks highlighted by the Federal Supreme Court. The publications were made hours after the arrest, while Bolsonaro was awaiting referral to a court hearing, scheduled for Sunday.

Bolsonaro was arrested at 6 am and taken to the Federal Police headquarters in the Federal District. The measure responds to a request from the PF and received agreement from the Attorney General’s Office. Minister Alexandre de Moraes highlighted a risk to public order and indicated signs of violation of the electronic ankle monitor. The prison sentence does not correspond to serving the sentence of 27 years and three months for the attempted coup, as the appeal deadlines are still open.

Shortly after the arrest was confirmed, Michelle Bolsonaro published a text on Instagram. In the statement, she stated: “We are not going to give up on our nation. I trust in God’s Justice. Human justice, as we have seen, is no longer sustainable… But I know that the Lord will provide Escape, just as he did in 2018, when my husband was the victim of a stabbing, planned to kill him, by a former psolist militant.” She also wrote that Bolsonaro “has consequences to this day because of this episode” and declared: “In God he is strong. He is great, and I love him very much. I will not let him give up on the purpose that the Lord entrusted to him.”

Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since August 4, serving precautionary measures for interfering in investigations. Moraes stated that there was a record of a violation of the ankle bracelet at 0:08 this Saturday by the Integrated Monitoring Integration Center of the Federal District. The minister also assessed that the vigil called by Flávio Bolsonaro the night before, in front of the former president’s condominium, could facilitate escape.

Michelle Bolsonaro, who was in Fortaleza for a PL Mulher meeting, canceled her participation after the incident. She stated: “I sincerely thank everyone for their understanding and affection. We continue in prayer. Brazil needs our intercession.” The former first lady awaits her flight to return to Brasília.

According to the decision registered by the STF, Moraes also highlighted that the former president’s condominium is just a few minutes from the South Embassy Sector. For the minister, this proximity adds to the history of attempts to escape investigations, such as the former president’s visit to the Hungarian Embassy and the supposed intention of requesting asylum at the Argentine Embassy. He also mentioned that allied deputies left the country during the investigations, which would reinforce the risk assessment of flight.

Bolsonaro arrived at the PF in Brasília at 6:35 am. After the initial procedures, he was sent to the PF Superintendence, where he will remain in a room reserved for authorities. The defense declared perplexity with the preventive detention and alleged risks to the former president’s health. The PL classified the measure as unnecessary.
