The minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) ordered the arrest of the deputy (-RJ). The parliamentarian, convicted in the coup plot process, according to monitoring carried out by .
During the investigation into the coup attempt, Moraes had already banned Ramagem from leaving the country and ordered him to hand over all his passports, both national and foreign.
As published on Wednesday (19), Ramagem is living in a luxury condominium in the city of North Miami, Florida, despite the conviction. He would have moved in September, having left Brazil after moving from Rio de Janeiro to Boa Vista.
On Wednesday itself, PSOL sent a letter to the Federal Police to request the arrest of the deputy. The following day, the party filed the same request with the STF. Moraes, however, had already ordered the arrest, in a decision that had not yet been made public, as it was kept confidential.
To date, the deputy has not spoken out on social media nor commented on the case through his lawyers or press office. Last month, he published videos on the internet commenting on work issues.
Ramagem’s lawyer, Paulo Cintra said that he only received information that his client decided to leave the country this week and that, therefore, he will not comment for now.
Director of Abin (Brazilian Intelligence Agency) during the (PL) government, Ramagem served 16 years, one month and 15 days in prison, in an initially closed regime.
The Supreme Court also determined the loss of his mandate – which, in theory, would need to undergo an analysis, after the end of the possibility of appeals in the trial.
Last week, he, the former president and other convicts from the so-called central nucleus of the coup plot had appeals denied by Moraes, which brought the start of the execution of the sentence closer — experts cite the possibility that this will happen from next week.
Ramagem was accused by the PGR (Attorney General’s Office) of committing five crimes, but the , in a clash with the Supreme Court, decided — the one that dealt with the illicit acts that would have been committed after his graduation as a parliamentarian, in this case, those directly linked to the 8th of January.
As a result, Ramagem was tried for three criminal offenses: attempted coup d’état, abolition of the democratic rule of law and armed criminal association.
He was accused of being one of those responsible for preparing Bolsonaro’s speech against the , in what would be the initial stage of a plan to keep Bolsonaro in charge of the Planalto Palace even in the event of a possible presidential defeat. His defense denied all accusations, but was unsuccessful in the STF.
Other cases
Ramagem’s departure adds to other recent cases of deputies who went abroad amid investigations and actions by the Supreme Court.
In July, (Podemos-ES) contradicted Moraes’ decision that his passport be seized. He is being investigated for having campaigned on social media against federal police officers who were investigating the coup plot.
Upon returning to Brazil, the minister ordered him to wear an electronic ankle bracelet, which caused friction between the Supreme Court and Congress. Moraes just let him remove the equipment.
The deputy (PL-SP) fled the country in June to escape the ten-year prison sentence for the invasion of the CNJ (National Council of Justice) system and the issuance of a false arrest warrant against Moraes. She was arrested in Rome and to Brazil. Once outside the country, she was convicted of armed persecution of a man in São Paulo, in 2022.
