The former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonario has been arrested and taken into federal custody this Saturday, as reported by his lawyer to the Reuters agency and confirmed by the Brazilian police. The former far-right president after being sentenced in September by the Brazilian Supreme Court to 27 years in prison for carrying out a frustrated coup attempt in 2022 after losing the presidential elections to the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro is awaiting his appeal against the sentence.
Celso Vilardi, Bolsonaro’s lawyer, has not specified the reason for the former president’s arrest. A person close to the case has informed the agency that this is a preventive measure related to the terms of his house arrest.
After his conviction, the Brazilian justice system had not yet issued a final arrest order, waiting for the former president to exhaust the appeal process against the sentence of 27 years and three months in prison. Since the conviction, Bolsonaro has been under strict house arrest.
