Prisoner’s diary: Sarkozy will publish a book about his time in prison in December

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced on Friday that in December he will publish a book about his stay in prison. He stated this less than two weeks after his release, TASR reports, according to an AFP report.

Sarkozy, 70, last month became the first president in modern French history to be jailed after being convicted of illegally financing his 2007 campaign. The upcoming book is called “Le journal d’un prisonnier” and will be published on December 10 by the Fayard publishing housewhich is controlled by right-wing billionaire Vincent Bollore, writes AFP. According to the French agency, Bollore has an increasing influence on French media and politics.

“There is nothing to see or do in prison,” Sarkozy wrote on Platform X. Unfortunately, there is constant noise. However, just like in the desert, the inner life of a person is strengthened in prison,” he added in a post in which he announced the publication of his book.

The publication has 216 pages and its price is less than 21 eurosthe publishing house Fayard specified. A lower court in September found Sarkozy, who was head of state from 2007 to 2012, guilty of trying to obtain funding from then-Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for his 2007 campaign that led to his election.

Sarkozy was sentenced to five years in prison and immediately appealed. He was released from La Santé prison in Paris after 20 days on the basis of a judge’s order. The appeal means that Sarkozy – who denies the allegations – he is once again presumed innocentwith a new trial scheduled from March 16 to June 3, 2026, the Paris appeals court said.
