An explosion on the deck of a burning ship disrupted power supply and crane operations at the Port of Los Angeles on Friday night (21).
All crew members were removed from the ship in the port of San Pedro, the city’s Fire Department said.
At around 8:27 pm local time (01:27 am on Saturday in Brasília), the remaining crew members were removed from the vessel, bringing the total to 23 safely removed, with no injuries, reported the Los Angeles Fire Department. Six crew members were missing.
Hazardous materials have been identified in several compartments of the port, and firefighters are wearing personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus.
“Emergency crews are on scene with more than 100 firefighters working to contain the fire, and Port Police are helping crews get to safety,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in a Facebook post.
She said the Los Angeles Fire Department is monitoring air quality as firefighting continues.
Marine units continue to cool the outside of the ship, and no crew members are allowed on the lower deck, firefighters said.
