The best candidates for Enem will be able to use a particle accelerator; find out how

The candidates With the best ENEM grades, they will be able to enter a college that teaches integrated science. Upon entering Ilum, a public college, students will be able to live in the country’s main science complex, where the Sírus, a 68 thousand square meter particle accelerator opened in 2018.

Both teaching and complex management are carried out by Cnpem (National Center for Research in Energy and Materials). Annually 40 students can take part in the project.

“It’s the experience of science in real life, not only learning science, but living with researchers day to day, this is very enriching. They really are part of the entire work process, in those days they spend in the laboratory”, says Ana Carolina Zeri, researcher and professor at iLum, in an interview with CNN Brazil.

How to join Ilum

To study at Ilum, initially, the candidate must express interest by sending a letter that describes the student trajectory, for phase two, the institution will filter the best exam scores from those who expressed interest and will select only 250 people.

Finally, an individual interview is carried out, in this process, there will be questions on mathematics, natural science and humanities. The bachelor’s degree is expected to last three years. The educational institution reserves 50% of places for public school students.

Registrations can be made, until December 15th at 6pm.

What does a particle accelerator do?

Sirius can study matter, as it accelerates particles using a type of “laser beam”. For example: if it is necessary to study a piece of steel that will be used to build a rocket, the particle accelerator can simulate all the force, heat, cold that the material may be subjected to in space. With the results, scientists can evaluate whether or not that item can be used for that purpose.

The accelerator can also be used for healthcare, such as molecular biology, so researchers can study the protein structures of viruses. All of this implies the possibility of Brazil advancing in the field of science.
