The party’s national executive spoke out about Bolsonaro’s arrest and assessed that his going to prison worsens the country’s image internationally
In a statement, he said he received with concern the news of the preventive arrest of former president Jair Bolsonaro. “There is nothing to celebrate when a former president of the Republic is arrested”, says the note signed by the party’s national executive. The statement highlights that, of the five people to hold the presidency since redemocratization, two were impeached and two others were arrested.
“It’s as if, in a family of five brothers, four had serious problems with the justice system. This is not something to be proud of — it’s a red alert about the health of our democracy.” The PSDB also stated that it has always defended — and will continue to defend — that institutions function with serenity and balance. “We are not a blind opposition that hopes for the worst. We want something that works, regardless of who is in power”, he added.
The party’s national executive assessed that the arrest worsens the country’s image internationally and talks about next year’s elections. “2026 is right around the corner. It’s time to think about what kind of leadership we want: the one that ignites or the one that pacifies? The one that divides or the one that unites? The one that respects institutions or the one that constantly challenges them?”
