The long-awaited meeting between the “communist” – according to him – the newly elected mayor of New York, and the “tyrant” – according to Mamdani – the president of the USA lasted less than half an hour in the White House and the atmosphere, at least according to what Trump himself mentioned, in the joint press conference in the Oval Office, was “great” despite any political differences between the two.
Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office after his meeting with Mamdani, Trump said: “I congratulated him, and we talked about some issues that we have a lot in common, like housing and housing, and food and prices. The price of oil is dropping significantly, and whatever I do will be good for New York.”
New York at the center of the debate
For his part, Madani said that his meeting with the president was “productive” and “focused on the place of mutual appreciation and love”.
Asked by a reporter about his past criticisms of Donald Trump, including calling him a “tyrant,” Maddani said today’s meeting “was focused not on the points of disagreement — which are many — but on the common purpose we have in serving New Yorkers.”
Trump: Tyrant isn’t that offensive
Trump, for his part, responded by joking: “I’ve been called far worse things than tyrant. It’s not that offensive.” He added that Madani might “change his mind after we start working together”.
In an almost cordial tone, Donald Trump dodged a question from a reporter about his threats to send troops to New York, saying: “I think we have known murderers and known drug dealers and some very bad people. In fact, perhaps more than anything, Mamdani wants a safe New York. We can talk all you want, but if you don’t have safe roads, you’re not going to succeed. So we will work together.”
Continuing to talk about the soon-to-be-official mayor of New York, Trump asserted that he may “have opinions that are a little… off,” but as he added, “everyone changes,” and he added: “I can tell you that since I first became president, some of my opinions have changed.” He then stated that: “I feel very confident that he (Mamdani) can do a very good job. I think it will actually surprise some conservatives.”
Trump will intervene on electricity prices in New York
From Trump’s statements, his reference to the fact that he will intervene in the famous New York power company Con Edison to reduce electricity prices caused an impression, while he claimed: “We agree on a lot more than I would have imagined. I want him to do a great job, and we’re going to help them do a great job.”
Trump added: “I always feel very, very comfortable when I’m in New York, and I think even more so after this meeting.”
From early on it was seen that the meeting would be in a positive atmosphere
Mamdani, upon entering the White House, was not noticed by reporters as he did not enter through the main entrance, while before the meeting he had repeated contacts with influential figures in New York, including Governor Kathy Hokul, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. The positive atmosphere that the meeting ultimately had, was seen long ago as President Trump in his statements on Fox News Radio claimed that he expects the meeting to be “quite civilized” and that he and the newly elected mayor will “get along fine”.
“He has a different philosophy, he’s a bit different. I give him a lot of credit for his campaign. He ran a successful campaign and we all know that campaigns are not easy,” Mr Trump said. “But I think we’ll do well. Look, we’re looking for the same thing — we want to make New York strong and, you know, there’s such a different philosophy.”
He added: “He was very kind to call, as you know. And we will have a meeting. I guess we meet at 3 today. And I believe she will be civilized enough. We’ll see.”
