Von der Leyen and Erdogan meet at the G20 and discuss Ukraine and borders

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, met with the president of Turkey, Recep Erdogan, during the G20 in South Africa. According to the European, the meeting was excellent. She thanked Erdogan for his personal commitment to advancing peace negotiations for Ukraine.

“Turkey is a key partner for Europe and remains essential in managing migration along the Eastern Mediterranean route,” highlighted von der Leyen.

Erdogan is one of the few NATO leaders who maintains good relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Von der Leyen highlighted that she seeks cooperation with Turkey in border management and combating immigrant trafficking. Furthermore, the European leader states that bilateral relations between the countries continue to advance. Finally, the president congratulated Turkey for hosting the COP next year.
