Farmers gained confidence and hope that this could be a good year for the countryside. The rain allowed dams and ponds to fill in the Évora district.
High temperatures marked the beginning of autumn in Alentejo, but the second week of November finally brought the rain, so desired by those who work the land here. After several years of severe or extreme drought, farmers breathed a sigh of relief last winter.
The rain allowed dams and ponds to fill in the Évora district. But there are several ‘Alentejos’ in one. A little further south, the situation is different. The rain was not yet enough to fill ponds and dams in the Beja district. Even so, we have, for example, the Odivelas Dam, which, in the last week, increased the amount of water stored by 3%.
Although in small quantities, the rain helps farmers in the region, especially because working the land at the beginning of the month was practically impossible. The scenario changed with the last few days of rain. The land began to take on a new life and, with it, the hope of those who depend on the countryside was reborn.
A little more lively, but in this area where water from Alqueva does not reach, farmers only depend on rain. They now look at the field with more confidence, but hope that winter and spring will bring enough water to face the rest of the year.
