Aligned with the Bolsonarist core, deputy reacts to the arrest of the former president and reinforces criticism of the Supreme Court
The federal deputy (PL-SC) reacted to the preventive detention of , ordered this Saturday (22) by minister Alexandre de Moraes. In a publication on X, the parliamentarian classified the measure as “political persecution” and stated that a vigil called by allies was “transformed into a narrative” of an escape attempt without evidence.
“Bolsonaro’s arrest is a political offensive against the greatest leader of the Brazilian right,” he wrote. For Carol, Moraes could have simply reinforced security around the former president’s residence, instead of interpreting the mobilization as a risk of escape. “It’s not justice. It’s political persecution,” he said.
The demonstration takes place amid a turbulent internal environment in the PL of Santa Catarina. In recent months, the deputy has been pressured by the internal dispute in the party since she announced her intention to run for the Senate for Santa Catarina. The movement caused noise with the governor and put Carol’s space on the Santa Catarina right wing in doubt for 2026. Despite the split, Carlos stated that he will continue to support the parliamentarian — regardless of her remaining in the PL.
The councilor for Rio de Janeiro states that there is an agreement signed between Jorginho and Jair Bolsonaro: each would choose a name to run for the Senate. Carlos would be nominated by the former president, and Carol, the governor’s choice. Behind the scenes, however, Jorginho has been articulating support for the senator’s re-election (PP-SC), as a strategy to expand alliances for its own 2026 campaign. The seam would remove Carol from the majority ticket and leave her without space within the PL.
Faced with these impasses, this Saturday’s gesture reinforces Carol’s effort to maintain her political identity linked to Bolsonarism and a possible alignment with Carlos Bolsonaro. Amid the electoral uncertainties in the state, she maintains unrestricted loyalty to the former president, repeating criticisms of the STF and adopting the same reading of political persecution that mobilizes the Bolsonarist base.
