The Prosecutor’s Office of the Mexican state of Michoacán reported that the investigation into the assassination of the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzoallowed him to discover that one of his escorts executed the hitman in cold blood that killed him, a 17 year old teenager identified as Victor Ubaldo.
The escort, identified as Demetrio N.is one of the seven municipal police officers arrested on Friday for their involvement in the death of Manzo, murdered during a Day of the Dead event in the center of the municipality he governed. Manzo had received threats from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
According to the expert evidence presented before the court that legalized the arrest of the seven agents and the alleged intellectual author, Jorge Armando N. (alias ‘The Licensed’), Demetrio N. shot the attacker in the back of the head, 10 centimeters away, when he He had already been subdued and was even handcuffedusing the same weapon with which the mayor was killed.
Demetrio N. himself admitted that he shot Ubaldothe material author of the homicide, although he assured that he struggled with him to take away his gun and that, being very strong, ended up triggering it. The Prosecutor’s Office now maintains that this version is false.
In its reconstruction of the events, the Prosecutor’s Office also indicates that The police prevented a paramedic from treating Ubaldo and that only with the arrival of the National Guard was access allowed, when the young man had already died.
The CJNG had offered a payment of 2 million pesos (about 94,000 euros) for the murder of the mayoraccording to the Prosecutor’s Office, which highlights the necessary involvement of the detained bodyguards, now accused of qualified homicide in the form of commission by omission.
The attack occurred around 8:10 p.m. on Saturday, November 1just after the inauguration of the Candle Festival in the center of Uruapan. Manzo was shot up to six times and was transferred still alive to the Fray Juan de San Miguel Hospital, where passed away.
The murder has shaken Mexican politics,The opposition remembers that Manzo had requested additional protection to the federal authorities, a protection that never arrived despite repeated threats from criminal organizations.
