Bar in Brasília celebrates court decision while Bolsonaro maintains significant support in the Federal District

A bar located at 405 Norte, in Brasília, decided to publicly celebrate the preventive arrest of Jair Bolsonaro, ordered this Saturday morning, November 22nd. The place brought together opponents of the former president in a festive atmosphere, with full streets and demonstrations in support of the decision of the Federal Supreme Court, after an attempt to violate the electronic ankle bracelet by Bolsonaro.

Despite the festive atmosphere among the former president’s critics, data from the last elections show that Bolsonaro maintained strong support in the Federal District. In 2018, in the second round, he won around 70% of the valid votes in Brasília. In 2022, it obtained 51.65% of the votes in the DF, winning in most administrative regions.

This contrast between the localized celebration and the history of support at the polls reveals the polarization still present in the Brazilian political scene. Bolsonaro’s arrest took part of the population to the streets, but electoral data indicates that he still has a significant base in the federal capital.

Despite the repercussion of preventive detention and contrary demonstrations in places like Brasília, it is important to remember that Jair Bolsonaro received more than 58 million votes in the second round of the 2022 presidential elections across Brazil, which represents 49.1% of the national electorate, demonstrating the strength and scope of his popular support in different regions of the country.

In the state of Acre, for example, former president Jair Bolsonaro was widely voted for, obtaining around 70% of the valid votes in the second round of the 2022 elections.
