The governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (União), was admitted this Saturday afternoon to the Vila Nova Star Hospital, in São Paulo. According to a medical bulletin published on the manager’s social media, Caiado suffered a cardiac arrhythmia and is stable, but will need to undergo a surgical procedure to “definitely correct the disorder” in his heart in the next 48 hours. Earlier, he had spoken out about the preventive arrest of former president Jair Bolsonaro, decreed by minister Alexandre de Moraes, defining the moment as a “sad chapter in national political life”.
According to the bulletin, Caiado is “conscious”, “clinically well” and remains “under continuous monitoring”. He is under observation and will remain hospitalized until the procedure is carried out.
Until the end of the morning, Caiado was the only presidential governor who had not spoken out about Bolsonaro’s arrest. Previously, the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), the governor of Paraná, Ratinho Júnior (PSD), and the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), had already criticized Moraes’ decision.

In the early afternoon, the governor of Goiás published a video in which he endorsed criticism of Bolsonaro’s arrest. He stated that the act is an attempt to “embrace the dignity” of the former president, defined him as a “God-fearing” man and offered solidarity to the family.
“The assumption of an escape, based on a vigil, is as unlikely as the overthrow of the Democratic Rule of Law, promoted by a band of rioters (acts of January 8, 2023). Nor is it reasonable to believe that someone with such poor health and is monitored by the Federal Police would be able to carry out an escape plan”, questioned Caiado.
The arrest was ordered because Moraes considered that there was a risk of escape and there were no longer conditions to maintain Bolsonaro’s house arrest. Furthermore, the former president acknowledged having used a soldering iron to try to open the electronic ankle bracelet that he used as a precautionary measure as determined by the STF.
In the order, Moraes stated that the act reveals Bolsonaro’s intention to break the equipment to facilitate a possible escape, amid the mobilization of supporters called by his son, senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ). In a video published on social media, the parliamentarian called for a prayer “vigil” in front of the condominium where his father lives.
