During her professional career, Slovak sports star Dominika Cibulková has become one of the world’s tennis elite. She has built a reputation as a relentless fighter who can surprise even the biggest stars of the WTA (World Organization of Women’s Professional Tennis). With a number of titles and a prominent presence at Grand Slams, she became one of the most famous Slovak sports figures.
The mother of two beautiful children, son Jakub and daughter Ninka, accepted an invitation to the latest part of the podcast on the web Off Record with musician Teri Čikoš. The former tennis player spoke about the most emotional matches during her career and revealed which victory still makes her feel after years.
She couldn’t choose from the many successes. “There’s probably not one, but definitely the biggest victories I’ve had. Of course, advancing to the finals of the Australian Open, when I was on the center court. Simply, I completely fell like a bug, didn’t I? What is this going on? Absolutely, mega happy (happy, editor’s note),” she recalled.
But one victory stuck in her memory. “Then when I actually won Singapore, when I was world champion in 2016, it was so normal that even now, when I talk about it, my stomach starts to hurt. Because it was one of the most difficult moments in my entire tennis career – to turn this matchball,” she revealed.
It was then that she froze. “Even though I was absolutely mentally strong and had a brutal year behind me, the moment just came when I had my first match ball and my legs shook. That I just normally cemented myself, I had my mental coach there, I had everything there… Cemented, just absolute concrete. And that was terribly challenging, it was really very, very difficult, but of course, I was able to manage it“, she described the powerful moment.
But she still had her feet on the ground. “And just those moments, that all the most beautiful victories, but I also remember what was after them, the difficult moments that actually got me there. That’s why I’m a person who can be said that even those successes and fame haven’t changed in any way, that I’m still the same, I don’t want to say that Dominika, like when I was 15 years old, of course,” thinks Cibulková.
“But a person gets older and has some life experiences, but I know that everything is terribly fickle and things can change from day to day” she said words that everyone should remember. What else did the former world tennis star tell us? You can see that in the video above the article.
