Deputy defends those convicted of coup acts, denies asylum negotiations to Jair Bolsonaro and states that the election without his family is ‘not democratic’
Representative Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) stated this Saturday (22) that he considers it “fair” that those convicted of the undemocratic acts of January 8 try to escape serving their sentences, as he understands that the convictions would be unfair.
“It’s fair for all the people on January 8, Congressman Alexandre Ramagem, if that’s really his intention when he went to the United States, to escape an unfair sentence. When a criminal commits a crime and goes to jail, it’s almost like an accident at work. Another thing is the head of someone who hasn’t committed any crime,” he told CNN Brasil. The statement comes after the preventive arrest of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), determined for violating the electronic ankle monitor.
Eduardo stated that he was not aware of any negotiations regarding a request for political asylum from Bolsonaro and denied having sought members of the White House to discuss the matter. He also accused Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF, of promoting “psychological torture” against the former president and defended “international pressure” for his father’s release.
The deputy also said that the absence of the Bolsonaro family in the 2026 elections would represent a lack of democracy. “If it is a scenario without Eduardo, Flávio, Jair, there is no longer any democracy. It doesn’t matter who the right-wing president will be, because, no matter how right-wing he is, he will not have the power to act freely. In everything he does, he will have to ask for the blessing of the STF”, he stated.
