German Chancellor says he is skeptical about US peace plan for Ukraine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told reporters in Geneva, Switzerland, that he remains “skeptical” that an agreement on the United States’ proposed 28-point peace plan for Ukraine can be reached by the deadline set by President Donald Trump, citing concerns about current differences of opinion.

“I wouldn’t say pessimistic, but I’m not convinced that the solution desired by President Trump will be reached in the next few days,” Merz said this Sunday (23), adding: “Today is Sunday. President Trump’s plan is to reach an agreement on Thursday [27]. We are still a long way from that.”

“That doesn’t mean it’s completely impossible to achieve […]. But I have doubts whether such a result is possible, given the current differences,” he added.

Merz said he also presented a proposal, which is being discussed in Geneva, on how to proceed.
