Jair Bolsonaro admitted that he damaged the monitoring bracelet: the ex-president was taken into police custody for the risk of escape

The detention of former President Bolsonaro and his confession to an attempt to damage a monitoring bracelet is causing a wave of attention. Details from the August 2023 case are provided by AFP.

Brazil’s ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, who was taken from house arrest to police custody on Saturday for being a flight risk, admitted that he tried to damage his monitoring bracelet “out of curiosity”. TASR writes about it according to the AFP agency.

  • Ex-president of Brazil Bolsonaro was taken into police custody.
  • He admitted attempting to damage his monitoring bracelet.
  • Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years for the coup attempt.

High risk of escape

In a video released by the Supreme Court, Bolsonaro explained that he damaged his bracelet with a soldering iron. The footage shows how the monitoring device is severely damaged and burned, but still attached to his ankle.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes reasoned on Saturday afternoon that Bolsonaro, who was sentenced to 27 years in prison for the failed coup attempt in 2022 but has not yet started serving his sentence, was a “high risk of flight”.

The ex-president was arrested just a few days before he was to begin serving his sentence. The defense team of the 70-year-old ex-president previously argued that he should serve his sentence at home, as a stay in prison would pose a risk to his health.
