Madrid Airport cancels all flights to Venezuela after US warning

In a statement on Friday (21), the American airline authority stated that commercial travel should take ‘precaution’ due to ‘a potentially dangerous situation in the region’

No flights bound for Madrid will leave this Monday (24) from Madrid airport, following the warning issued on Friday (21) by the American air authority, which recommended “extreme caution” when flying over the South American country and the southern Caribbean Sea. Among the airlines that confirmed the suspension of flights to Venezuela are GOL and Latam, as well as the Spanish Iberia, the Portuguese TAP, the Colombian Avianca and the Trinidadian Caribbean.

The Spanish Air Europa, which also flies to the Caribbean country, has not yet joined the cancellation, as the first flight scheduled is for next Tuesday (25). A company spokesperson explained to EFE Agency that the company is “monitoring the situation”.

Iberia, which operates five weekly flights to Venezuela – the first scheduled for Monday – was the first to decide to suspend.

The American air authority urged commercial flights to “exercise extreme caution” due to “a potentially dangerous situation in the region”, a warning that coincides with the extensive American military deployment in the area to pressure the government of .

The US launched a campaign against drug trafficking in September which, so far, has consisted of bombing civilian boats in the Caribbean allegedly linked to this criminal activity. These attacks extended to Pacific waters and have left more than 80 people dead so far.
