Man arrested after holding children hostage in Campinas

A 32-year-old man was arrested on Saturday afternoon (22) after holding his two minor children hostage in a residential apartment on Avenida Ary Rodrigues, in Campinas, in the interior of São Paulo.

According to information from the Military Police, agents were called after neighbors reported that the man, in an outbreak, was locked in the property armed with a pistol. Upon arriving at the scene, police officers confirmed the fact and a process of intermediation between the suspect and the team was initiated.

The children’s father kept one of the minors with him in one of the rooms, while agents from the radio patrol and the 1st BAEP (PM Special Actions Battalion) continued with negotiations outside the apartment. They were initially able to negotiate the release of the two children, who left the scene without any injuries.

After a few hours, after the Special Tactical Actions Group (GATE) took over the incident, the man was convinced and surrendered. He was disarmed and removed from the property. A loaded .380 caliber pistol was also seized.

According to the SSP (Public Security Secretariat), the suspect underwent medical treatment and was taken to the Women’s Defense Police Station. The case was registered as threat and illegal possession of a firearm.
