On Wednesday, November 5, fans and supporters of Karol Duchoň met at the Bratislava cemetery in Vrakun to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of the legendary Slovak singer. “That’s how 40 years ago I was sitting in the hospital waiting to wish you a happy birthday. Well, they didn’t let me see you anymore, and the next day you weren’t here anymore,” wrote Dana Duchoňová on the Facebook page she runs for her father, when announcing the memorial meeting.

At the event, its participants also commemorated Karol Duchoň’s 75th birthday in April of this year. One of the greatest musical talents was remembered by songs sung by Duchoň’s great admirer and singer Ludo Kuruc. “It came about spontaneously, 40 years have passed since my father’s death, it had to be remembered. Ludo has been singing his father’s songs for over 20 years, he was the first to think of contacting himDuchoňová told TASR.

For the marquee show Smotánka, singer Ludo Kuruc recalled the moment when he learned about the death of the legendary Duchoň. “When I was at the war with Paľo Haber, Paľo came from the desert and said: “Listen, do you know who died, guys? Karol Duchoň”,” he revealed. Habera was 23 years old at the time.

Successes at concerts at home and abroad as well as new studio recordings brought Duchoň great popularity. The associated fast pace of life gradually took its toll on his lifestyle.

Also thanks to alcohol, the successful star slowly became an unreliable partner on the music scene, the circle of his collaborators dwindled. Bad lifestyle took its toll on his health. He died on November 5, 1985 at the age of 35.
