This year’s October ended as normal in terms of precipitation. In the northern part of the country as above normal and in places in the south of Slovakia as dry. In terms of water content, it was above normal in the north of Slovakia, below normal in the basins of central Slovakia and dry in the basins of Morava and Bodrog. At the end of the month, experts noted that the first level of flood activity had been exceeded in the basins of central and eastern Slovakia. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) informed about this on the website, saying that this month is assessed as below average in groundwater.
“In terms of average monthly flows, we included this month among normal months in the Danube, upper Váh and Dunajec and Poprad basins. In the other basins, we assess this month as subnormal, with the exception of the Bodrog basin, where we assess October as a dry month. October 2025 was wetter than last year’s October in the upper Váh and Dunajec and Poprad basins, drier in the other basins, especially in the Bodrog, Morava and Danube basins,” concluded SHMÚ.
He claims that rainfall occurred regularly throughout the month, mostly at low intensity. Local and intense precipitation, with the highest totals in the basins, occurred at the end of the month. That’s when reached the first level of flood activity at the water measuring stations on the tributaries of the upper Váh, on the right-hand tributaries of the upper Hron, rarely also in the Dunajec and Hornád basins.
Experts also noted an improvement in the groundwater situation, especially in the upper part of Váh and Hornád, and in the Bodva and Slaná basins. “In the remaining part of the territory of Slovakia, the situation in the underground water has not changed significantly,” they pointed out. Above-average conditions continued to persist in the Morava basin. According to experts, the state of drought was again in the Bodrog basin, the average state was in the Váh, Dunajec and Poprad basins.
Average to slightly below average condition was found in the Bodva and Slaná basins, average to slightly above average condition was found in Hornád. The below-average state of the groundwater level and the abundance of springs was recorded in the Hrona and Ipľa basins.
