Turkey will host the COP31 climate summit in 2026, with Australia leading the negotiation process, according to a document released at the COP30 summit in Brazil on Friday, confirming an earlier announcement that a split-host agreement was expected.
The statement was released by Germany following a meeting of the Western Europe and Others Group, which was tasked with selecting the 2026 host.
The agreement, which resolved a long impasse between the two parties competing to host the UN climate negotiations, defined that, delegating negotiation responsibilities to Australia.
“If there is a difference in views between Turkey and Australia, consultations will be held until the difference is resolved to the satisfaction of both parties,” the statement said.
One, and Australia will lead the year-long process that shapes the agenda and priorities ahead of COP31.
