Australian senator wears burqa in protest at Parliament

Pauline Hanson protested after the Senate rejected her bill to ban Muslim dress in public places

The senator (One Nation, right) appeared at the Australian Parliament wearing a burqa this Monday (24.Nov.2025) as a form of protest. The demonstration took place after the Senate rejected his project to ban the wearing of Muslim clothing in public places in Australia.

The session had to be temporarily suspended when Hanson refused to remove his clothing and leave the plenary, as requested.

This was not the first demonstration of this type carried out by the senator. Hanson had previously worn the burqa in Parliament in 2017, also pushing for a national ban on the garment. The senator and her party’s anti-immigration policies.

Hanson’s protest this Monday (Nov 24) generated criticism from senators in the Parliament. The Muslim senator (Australian Greens, left) characterized the act as “racist”.

In a Facebook post, Hanson justified her protest by stating that the burqa is “an instrument of oppression against women, which represents a risk to national security”.

Experts from the UN (United Nations) consider the punishment for wearing Islamic clothing a violation of human rights.
