Eduardo Barroso confessed to “the biggest illegality of his career” to save an illegal immigrant

Eduardo Barroso, surgeon and former service director at a Lisbon hospital, revealed on SIC Notícias what he considers to have been “the biggest illegality of his career”, in a story that took place more than two decades ago and shared during a debate on health.

At issue was the decision to perform a liver transplant on an illegal immigrant, even after being warned that, officially, this patient “did not exist”.

The surgeon recalled this episode when asked about the way illegal immigrants are treated in the National Health Service, highlighting that, despite existing regulations, his choice was guided by humanitarian principles and the urgency of the clinical situation.

At the end of his testimony, he also left a public reflection, stating that he would like the candidates for the Presidency of the Republic to be confronted with this same question and asked to say what they would have done if they were in his place.
