Government launches tourist meters and celebrates progress in tourism

Equipment in Brasília and Copacabana records record flow and is part of a strategy to boost employment

The government inaugurated this Monday (24.Nov.2025) tourist meters in Brasília, in the Federal District, and in Rio de Janeiro, in Copacabana. The minister of Brazil, Celso Sabino, activated the equipment installed on the Esplanada dos Ministérios, in front of the National Library of Brasília Leonel de Moura Brizola, simultaneously activating the one in Rio.

The panels recorded the milestone of 8 million international tourists in 2025. The count will continue until December 31, and the government’s expectation is to reach 10 million visitors. At the same time, Embratur held an event at the Rio Art Museum (MAR), in Rio de Janeiro, to present tourist flow projections generated by artificial intelligence.

After the ceremony, Sabino attributed the increase in entries into the country to the international activities of the president (PT). “Effect of President Lula with his international leadership. Effect of the serious and planned investments that the Brazilian government has made in promoting our national and international tourism. Effect of the modernization of our airports, ports and infrastructure works that have been changing the lives of the Brazilian people”he stated.

The minister also highlighted that the panel allows the population to get closer to the sector’s results. “May everyone be able to monitor, at the same time, the number of tourists entering our country. This represents employment, economic development and the arrival of foreigners who contribute to the nation’s growth”he stated.

Sabino also stated that the sector has been decisive in generating jobs and reducing inequalities. According to the minister, around 520 thousand new jobs were created in 2 and a half years. “Where tourism arrives, poverty ends. Where tourism arrives, poverty ends. Where tourism arrives, underdevelopment ends”he declared. He stated that the government’s goal is to transform tourism into one of the country’s main economic sources.

For Sabino, the touristometer has a practical and symbolic function by reinforcing the importance of tourism for national self-esteem. “This panel has a symbolic value because everyone who passes by will follow the evolution of the entry of foreign tourists into our country and raise our self-esteem even more, raise even more the aspect that Brazilians need to know more and more about their country to get to know their country more and more, to love their country more and more”these.
