Portugal secured, for the first time, a place in the final of the under-17 World Championship, after overcoming Brazil on penalties, in an intense match played at the Aspire Zone complex, in Qatar. Regulatory time ended without goals and the decision ended up smiling on the Portuguese team, who won 6-5 on penalties.
The final is scheduled for Thursday, November 27th, at the Khalifa International Stadium, where Portugal will face Austria. The Austrian team also reached their first final at this level, after beating Italy 2-0, with both goals scored by Johannes Moser, who now leads the list of top scorers in the competition.
The Portuguese route to the final has been solid, despite the defeat against Japan in the group stage. The team coached by Bino Maçães beat Belgium, Mexico and Switzerland in the knockout rounds, confirming its consistency and competitive capacity. This qualification represents a historic milestone for national youth football, which had never played in an under-17 World Cup final.
