Trains stopped, planes grounded, nurseries closed. It is being prepared today for three days of national strike in protest against the budgetary reforms of Bart De Vever’s government, which trade union organizations describe as a “demolition” of the welfare state.
The public railway company (SNCB) had already reduced its routes since yesterday Sunday and today only one route in two or three depending on the line is expected to run, while it is estimated that the rest of public transport will also be paralyzed. Eurostar services, connecting Brussels to Paris, are also expected to be affected.
Tomorrow, 11/25, schools, nurseries, post offices, waste collection services, a large part of health services will take their turn, while the mobilization in public transport will continue.
The mobilization will culminate on Wednesday, when many sectors of the private sector will participate.
No departures from Belgium’s two largest airports, Brussels and Charleroi, are planned, according to the operating companies. There will also be problems at arrivals, as ground staff and security staff will be on strike.
Austerity measures
The centre-right governing coalition has announced austerity measures aimed at saving 10 billion euros by 2030.
Belgium, one of the most indebted countries in the EU, is being asked to save billions to avoid breaking debt and deficit rules. At the same time, it is obliged to drastically increase military spending under NATO plans.
The government is facing increasing pressure from unions and public opinion. In October, around 100,000 people demonstrated in Brussels against the planned measures.
