Opposition presses for vote on amnesty: ‘Chamber needs to decide this week’

Opposition congressmen want to accelerate the agenda after Bolsonaro’s arrest

Opposition deputies announced that they will pressure the president of the Chamber so that the amnesty proposal for the 8th of January defendants is discussed this week, classifying the issue as urgent for national pacification and the restoration of legal security.

The deputy leader of the Opposition, Representative Sanderson (PL-RS), stated that the Chamber cannot postpone another agenda that has strong popular support: “Amnesty needs to be voted on now. Brazil calls for balanced justice and an end to excesses. Let’s push the agenda firmly, because Parliament cannot close its eyes to thousands of families who have lived for years under fear and legal insecurity. The time is now.”

In the same vein, Rodrigo Valadares (União-SE) reinforced that voting is essential to end a cycle of political persecution: “We will press for the agenda. The Chamber cannot postpone this debate any longer. The country needs to turn the page and overcome the wounds left by disproportionate processes and abusive convictions. Amnesty is a necessary step to pacify Brazil.”

Deputy Coronel Tadeu (PL-SP) highlighted that the opposition will act in a coordinated manner to ensure that the proposal moves forward: “We will not allow this agenda to be shelved. Amnesty is a legitimate desire of society and a moral duty of Parliament. We will work to have it voted on this week, whatever the cost.”

Parliamentarian Captain Alberto Neto (PL-AM) recalled that amnesty is a historic instrument of Brazilian democracy: “It is past time to correct injustices. Amnesty is a constitutional mechanism that has already helped the country at various times. Let’s mobilize so that this vote takes place immediately.”

Ending the chorus of opposition, Rodolfo Nogueira (PL-MS) stated that the bench is united and determined: “The Chamber has an obligation to face this issue. We are going to put pressure on the President of the House to decide on the amnesty this week. We are not asking for favors. We are demanding justice, balance and the pacification of a country.”
